Being a Premium connects Self Help Group, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and local communities with sponsors and funding opportunities to empower and support sustainable development projects.

A Premium Membership provides exclusive access to a wider range of funding opportunities, grants, mentorship programs, and networking events. Premium Members are prioritized when matching with potential sponsors.

Postgraduate Research Grant Program in Kenya

Postgraduate Research Grant Program in Kenya
Deadline: Mar 06, 2026

The National Research Fund (NRF) is inviting applications for its Postgraduate Research Grant Program, an initiative aimed at strengthening Kenya’s Science, Technology, and Innovation ecosystem. The program supports high-quality postgraduate research that aligns with national development priorities and addresses areas where human capacity is limited. The grant is designed to support postgraduate researchers in conducting innovative and original studies, strengthening their research skills, benefiting from mentorship, and completing their degrees on time. It also aims to generate knowledge with meaningful academic, policy, and societal impact in priority areas, while encouraging interdisciplinary and inclusive research approaches. Funding is available strictly for the research component of master’s and doctoral programmes. Eligible fields include Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences; Physical, Industrial and Energy Sciences; Biological and Health Sciences; Infrastructure; Information and Communication Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Earth and Space Sciences; and Emerging Technologies. Doctoral candidates may receive up to KSh 2,000,000 for a maximum period of three years, while master’s candidates may receive up to KSh 500,000 for one year. The grant is open to researchers from both public and private universities in Kenya. It does not cover tuition fees, as it is strictly a research grant. All funds will be managed through the applicant’s host institution. Eligible expenses include direct research costs such as equipment, consumables, essential infrastructure or system upgrades, research trials, and mobility expenses related to project activities (capped at 20% of the total grant). Funding may also support capacity building, knowledge sharing, research uptake, and dissemination activities. To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens and full-time postgraduate students registered at a recognized Kenyan institution. Master’s applicants must be below 35 years of age, while doctoral applicants must be below 45 at the time of application. Applicants must have an approved research proposal endorsed by their supervisor and the relevant postgraduate board, demonstrate that the research can be completed within the grant period, and confirm that they are not receiving another grant covering the same research costs. Applications must be submitted electronically through the Online Grants Management System no later than 6th March 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Each application must include an endorsement letter signed by the researcher, supervisor, graduate school or faculty representative, and the Head of Institution, and must bear the official institutional stamp. Only successful applicants will be contacted after the review process. Proposals will be assessed based on their quality and originality, relevance to the call objectives, feasibility, budget justification and value for money, potential impact, soundness of research design and methodology, and the technical capacity of the researcher and supervisory team. Successful grantees will be required to submit progress reports every six months and a final report endorsed by the Head of Institution. They must publish their findings in reputable international peer-reviewed journals, acknowledge the National Research Fund in all publications, provide a detailed financial report within 30 days of project completion, and return any unspent funds at the end of the grant period.
